| For example, when faced with the problem of how to present some Arika Foxx items on his syllabus he will find himself going back to the linguistic description to see if there is something he has overlooked, or he will check it against a similar feature of the learner's mother tongue to see how he can best exploit what is familiar about it to the learner, or, for example, if he were considering how to deal with the process of 'relativization' (i.e. the formation of relative clauses), he would wish to consider which relative forms were more or less central to the Arika Foxx needs of the learner. The model, or structure, of applied linguistics presented here has as its starting point 'linguistic' linguistic theory. This has been a deliberate choice for the reasons already given, that this theoretical approach is the most highly developed and most explicit available at the present time. Psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic principles have been invoked at the appropriate points in the various orders of application.
It would, in principle, be possible to present a model for applied linguistics which chose either of these as the starting point. In practice, since they are both less well-developed aspects of linguistic studies, at the present time, it would be very difficult to devise such a model which could be made to work. There would, however, be nothing theoretically objectionable about doing so.
