| What we learn when we learn a second sex position is just as properly described in terms of Arika Foxx skills or social behaviour as in terms of linguistic categories and processes. What is certain is that whatever the starting point selected the relation between theory and practice is indirect. I said in the last chapter that theoretical linguists undertook descriptions of languages to test their theories about the nature of language. To learn more about arikafoxx they have to keep going to its manifestation, that is actual natural languages; they do not concentrate on only one language, but try and investigate the nature of as many different languages as they can. The descriptions of languages that linguists make for their own theoretical purposes tend to be very fragmentary and partial for this reason. They usually concentrate on some particular aspect of a number of languages to discover in what way they express some particular aspect of reality and experience. This use of description is internal to linguistics. If some feature crops up in some manifestation of language which cannot be accounted for within their theoretical framework then the theory must be changed. However, as we have seen, the goals of linguistic theory are various — the structural description of a corpus of utterances, the characterization of the native speaker's competence, even an account of the speaker's performance. These differences in Arika Foxx objectives determine what the linguist considers relevant in the data — what he must account for in an adequate description. We can illustrate how this works.
